چکیده
While most studies find evidence of a wage-firm size premium, we find that larger firms in China actually pay lower wages. We also find that the most plausible explanation for this result is that larger firms in China employ a higher ratio of blue-collar workers.

The Role of Expectation in Job Search and Firm Size Effect on Wages
One of the most puzzling facts in economics is the firm size-wage effect. After controlling for the observable characteristics of workers (age, gender, education, residence etc.), firms (industry, occupation, work conditions etc.) and negotiation effect (unionization), one still finds that the sheer size of a firm increases the wage, contrary to the one-good one-price doctrine. We provide a sim...
متن کاملAssortative Matching with Large Firms: Span of Control over More versus Better Workers∗
In large firms, management resolves a trade off between hiring more versus better workers. The span of control or size is therefore intimately intertwined with the sorting pattern. Span of control is at the center of many studies in macroeconomics, comparisons of factor productivity, trade, and labor. With heterogeneous workers, we analyze the worker assignment, firm size, and wages. The patter...

This paper explores the effects of overseas activity on parent firm employment in a panel of Taiwan’s large, listed firms during 2000-2005. Propensity score matching estimates of discrete effects suggest that employment growth did not differ significantly between new parents and firms with no overseas operations. Generalized method of moments’ estimates of marginal effects for all firms indicat...
متن کاملThe Location Decisions of Foreign Investors in China: Untangling the Effect of Wages Using a Control Function Approach
There is almost no support for the proposition that capital is attracted to low wages from firm-level studies. We examine the location choices of 2,884 firms investing in China between 1993 and 1996 to offer two main contributions. First, we find that the location of labor-intensive activities is highly elastic to provincial wage differences. Generally, investors’ wage sensitivity declines as t...

In this paper we investigate the implications of labour and capital market imperfections for the relationship between firm size and earnings. To establish that such a question is of interest we need to show that the firm size-wage effect cannot be explained by either the observed or unobserved skills of the workforce or the characteristics of the workplace. To do that we require data where cont...
